National Guard Activated

Gov. Mike Easley has activated the North Carolina National Guard in anticipation of heavy rains and flooding.

Remnants of Hurricane Frances arrived in the Western North Carolina mountains Monday night and forecasters expect six to eight inches of rain by Wednesday night.

The National Weather Service says that amount of rain will bring flash flooding of creeks and the storm also could bring tornadoes as well as sustained winds of 15 to 25 miles-per-hour and possible gusts to 40 miles-per-hour.
