A former WITN-er received a special gift this week. You may remember him as "WITNey the Hobo."
Although there were several Hobos over the years, Gene Hudson portrayed WITNey back in the mid to late '60s. He played the silent side-kick to host Sammy Bland. Sammy was our main weatherman at WITN and was also the host of our kids show called The Funny Page.
While going through the WITN Art Collection during our recent move, we discovered an original oil painting of WITNey, and decided the painting should stay in the WITN family. And what better place, than in the home of someone who actually played the character.
Gene was quite excited to receive the painting. He remembered it from his days at WITN and said he was glad that it had not gotten lost over the years.
Gene operates Hudson Signs between Washington and Chocowinity.
You can see other pictures of WITNey, Sammy and other WITN characters on Carolina Camera in the Way Back When At WITN gallery.
