Ann Curry Out As Co-Host Of NBC's 'Today' Show

Ann Curry is officially out as "Today" show co-host after one year.

She announced her departure on the show Thursday, ending a week of awkward television as she continued working after word spread that NBC was looking to oust her. The popular morning show is facing its biggest challenge in the ratings from ABC's resurgent "Good Morning America" since the mid-1990s.

Curry started as the show's news anchor in 1997, and was promoted last June following Meredith Vieira's exit. But things never really clicked with co-host Matt Lauer. "Today" hadn't lost a week in the ratings since 1996 but this spring lost four times.

NBC's Savannah Guthrie is expected to replace Curry.

Ann Curry confirmed the rumors that she is leaving the Today Show. She will make the announcement on the air Thursday morning.

USA Today reported Curry will step down from the Today Show on Thursday morning. Curry has served as co-host next to Matt Lauer for one year, following Meredith Vieria's departure. Curry told USA Today that this will be a tough day.

"I'm going to have to tell our viewers. That's what makes me more emotional than anything. I don't want to leave them. I love them. And I will really miss them," Curry said.

Curry has a new contract with NBC, just not on the Today Show. Her new contract has her leading a seven-person unit with a ticket to cover the world's biggest stories, according to USA Today. The paper reported Curry will produce network specials and pieces for several shows as well as occasionally fill in as anchor on Nightly News.

There is no word on who NBC is pursuing to fill Ann's soon to be empty seat.
