WITN sat down with the author to talk about the event and a recent honor.
Sparks was on the Anderson show on WITN Wednesday promoting the new movie from his book "The Lucky One" when he was surprised by New Bern Mayor Lee Bettis.
Via computer, Bettis announced New Bern has declared April 20 "Nicholas Sparks Community Volunteerism Day."
Sparks said it was a real honor because voluteering is such an important part of his life.
"I'm honored," he said. "I was thrilled. I had no idea that was coming, and it's great. I think volunteering is a very important thing to do. You know my wife and I engage in philanthropy, but we also donate a lot of our time to a lot of different events to our own foundation to the school we founded to other community events."
"It adds a lot of meaning to our lives," Sparks went on to say.
The author said this weekend's events in New Bern are to raise awareness and funds for the Nicholas Sparks Foundation and the charities it supports. He says he and his wife are matching every dollar raised.
