About 600 students who attend school on Hatteras Island are beginning their school year more than a week late because of damage caused by Hurricane Irene.
Students at Cape Hatteras Elementary and Cape Hatteras Secondary schools are scheduled to return to class Thursday. They were supposed to start classes Aug. 25, but that changed because of Irene, which made landfall in North Carolina just two days later. Hatteras Island was especially damaged, with the storm carving new breaches on the north end of the island.
Students elsewhere in Dare County returned to school Aug. 31.
