NEW INFO: School System Comments On Former Worker's Embezzlement

A woman who used to work for a local county school system is behind bars after her sentencing for embezzling nearly a half-million dollars from work.

Forty-four-year-old Angela Potter is from Kinston and is now in the Greene County Jail. The former Greene County school's benefits specialist was sentenced to five to seven years in prison.

The woman has also been ordered to pay back $532,376.08 to the school system.

The SBI helped investigate Potter's crimes following her arrest in September.

Greene County Schools Superintendent Patrick Miller released this statement from the school system:

"Greene County Schools confirms that Angela E. Potter began work in Greene County Schools as a benefits specialist in May, 2001. Effective June 1, 2011, as a result of an investigation by the Greene County Schools, Ms. Potter was suspended without pay. Effective June 30, 2011, Mrs. Potter's employment was terminated by the Greene County Board of Education. Mrs. Potter was an employee of Greene County Schools for approximately 10 years. The embezzlement was discovered by school officials and was turned over to law enforcement officials for further investigation; Greene County Schools worked closely with the State Bureau of Investigation in this matter. The investigation by Greene County Schools and the SBI revealed the mishandling of school funds and resulted in the plea by Mrs. Potter on June 11, 2012. As a result of its investigation, Greene County Schools has implemented additional fiscal controls. Due to the possibility of future litigation, Greene County Schools will have no further comment on this matter at this time."
