UNC Tuition Increase Update

University of North Carolina system President Tom Ross is recommending tuition and fee increases of less than 10 percent.

Ross is expected to offer the board of governors the details in the next few weeks.

He said Thursday he hopes the increases will be less than last year's 9 percent increase.

Ross says he wants to balance low tuition and high quality education to maintain the system's excellence.

The various schools in the system have proposed tuition and fee increases ranging from about 4 percent at UNC Pembroke to 13.5 percent at UNC-Asheville.

The increases include 11.4 percent at UNC-Chapel Hill, 10.4 percent at North Carolina State University and 8.5 percent at North Carolina Central University.

A group of students protested the increases at the UNC board meeting Thursday.

"My guess would be if the increases are to be less than 10 percent, it will come in around 9 percent. Most of you got 10 percent pay increases didn't you? Education will be like medical insurance, for the wealthy." The problem is that the state keeps cutting funding. When you cut state funding by about 13%, a 10% increase in tuition doesn't seem all that crazy. Even with the increase in tuition, they would be forced to absorb the rest of the cuts.

It would be nice to read an article on WITN.com without having to decipher through all the typos and errors. I guess that isn't a priority anymore when hiring editors.
