Watauga County Teacher Named NC Teacher Of The Year

Darcy Grimes, a third grade teacher at Bethel Elementary School in Watauga County is the 2012-13 North Carolina Teacher of the Year.
The announcement was made Thursday in Cary.

Two teachers from Eastern Carolina were among the nine finalists for the North Carolina Teacher of the Year award: Lisa Staats from Chocowinity Middle in Beaufort County and Malinda Pennington of Toisnot Middle in Wilson County.

Last year's winner was Tyronna Hooker, an exceptional children teacher at Graham Middle School in the Alamance-Burlington Schools District.

Lisa Staats from Chocowinity Middle in Beaufort County and Malinda Pennington of Toisnot Middle in Wilson County are two of the nine finalists for the prestigious statewide honor.

The North Carolina Teacher of the Year will spend the 2012-13 school year traveling the state as an ambassador for the teaching profession. The winner also gets a car to use during the year, an engraved vase, a one-time cash award of $7,500, a trip to the National Teacher of the Year conference, the opportunity to travel abroad through an endowment at the North Carolina Center for International Understanding, and a technology package valued at over $17,000 from SMART Technologies. The winner will also serve as an advisor to the State Board of Education for two years.

The announcement is expected to be named around 2 p.m. Thursday.
