TEACHER OF THE WEEK: Samantha Miller

WITN's Teacher of the Week for April 10th, 2013 is Samantha Miller, a fifth grade teacher at W.H. Robinson Elementary School.

This is her eighth full year teaching – 1 ½ years in first grade, six years in fourth and this is my first year in fifth grade.

Miller is a graduate of East Carolina University and received her National Board Certification in 2010.

Mrs. Miller is also the 2013-2013 W.H. Robinson Teacher of the Year nominee.

Miller says, "For me, education is all about relevance and ownership. I am a structured, fun loving teacher and maintain high expectations for ALL of my students. I make a conscious effort to establish rapport with all students and to allow them to see me as a person, not just someone teaching a curriculum."

"Each day, I am constantly trying to secure ownership and a 'reason to learn' for my fifth graders; I want them to see the purpose and/or reason for learning and working hard," said Miller. "If my students could describe me, I infer that they would say that I am a teacher who expects their best and that I truly love my job and going to work each day. Just as I expect the best from my students, I am constantly reminding them that they deserve my best effort and respect as well. We are truly a partnership and rely on each other to make our experiences together a successful one.”

The person who nominated Mrs. Miller wrote: “My son’s educational journey has profoundly affected because of her selfless acts and love for him as well as countless other students. I know for a fact that my son’s life has been touched by his teacher Ms. Miller. Please consider this nomination, it would mean so much to all parents and students who have ever known this phenomenal educator.”
