This week’s Teacher of the Week for Wednesday, February 27th is Jamie Connerton from Pactolus School (K-8) in Pitt County.
She is a first year teacher. Her teaching career got started when she began teaching gymnastics to children after she graduated from high school as a way to stay involved with the sport.
She graduated from UNC Pembroke in 2004 with a degree in mass communications and worked for a Raleigh TV station for about a year. She missed working with kids so she went back to teaching gymnastics again.
After breaking her foot she could no longer teach gymnastics so her journey moved to teaching preschool. After a number of years she decided she wanted to teach older children. With help from her family and friends she was able to go back to college in order to earn her teaching license from East Carolina University.
Jamie says the experiences she has had in the gym, preschool, and the college classroom helped to prepare her for her journey to the elementary classroom.
Jamie writes: “When I see how successful my students are and the positive impact I have already made in my first year of teaching public school, I know that I made the right choice by becoming a teacher!”
The person who nominated Jamie wrote: “Ms. Connerton really goes out of her way to make sure each child knows how special and important him/her are. She always has excellent ideas to curve behavioral issues before they arise and put a lot of effort and energy in making education fun for her children.”
