Senate Okays Calendar Exemption For Greene, Onslow Counties

Two school systems here in Eastern Carolina are getting exceptions to the school year calendar because of missed days due to a tornado and a wildfire.

Greene County lost a week of classes when a tornado destroyed the county's middle school on April 16th. Back in March three schools in Onslow County lost days when a wildfire forced them to close.

If the House also approves, it will be the fourth time since 1999 that legislators have stepped in because of hurricanes and other storms to allow exceptions to the requirement that schools hold classes for 180 days.

Sensible decision. Good learning comes from the quality of education, not just from the number of days it may attempted.
