School Board To Press Case For Public Education

The chairman of the North Carolina school board says they'll continue pressing the case that public education is a common and core good.

Chairman Bill Harrison said Thursday the school board plans a meeting April 27 to discuss the direction for public schools. His statement comes days after a special school board meeting brought more than two dozen local superintendents to Durham to describe the effect of years of recession-driven budget cuts.

Public school leaders are ramping up their activity two months ahead of a legislative session in which lawmakers will be asked to replace about $250 million in federal funds. The last of the money from the federal stimulus package that helped keep teachers on the job runs out this year, leading superintendents to warn of classroom cuts ahead.
