Richlands Elementary Students, Teachers Work Around Hurricane Damage
One school in the east didn't let hurricane damage stop them from having classes, but they had to do some major reorganization.
Richlands Elementary School has floor tiles ripped up, insulation scattered in some rooms, soggy ceiling tiles that have fallen out, and holes in the roof. Eight classrooms and the cafeteria have severe storm damage. So bad in fact, after only 2 days of returning to school after the hurricane, teachers had to relocate to avoid leaks and debris. Art teacher Justus Pinkey had to give up her classroom and move to a mobile classroom.
"I lost the classroom, yes. It's okay. I'm on a cart, but we're still doing the same fun activities- just at their desks," said Pinkey.
With the cafeteria out of commission, students now go through the lunch line in a back hallway of the school and eat in classrooms.
