UNC Report Calls For Unifying Halifax Schools

A report on the state of public education in Halifax County says all three school districts should be unified as a first step to ensuring a quality education for all students.

The yearlong study by the UNC Center for Civil Rights says the system that includes Halifax County Public Schools, Weldon City Schools and the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District remains one of the most segregated systems in the state. The county is 39 percent white, while nearly 100 percent of students at Halifax County and Weldon City schools are non-white. The Roanoke Rapids district is more than 70 percent white.

The report was released Monday and says the Halifax County and Weldon City schools have some of the lowest-performing schools in the state, along with high teacher turnover rates.
