Pitt County School Board Member Dies

Pitt County School Board member Matthew Ward has passed away according to school officials.

In a press release school officials said, "It is with extreme sadness that Pitt County Schools acknowledges the untimely death of school Board member Matthew Ward." No further information has been given on how Ward died.

School Board Chair Billy Peaden said, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Matthew Ward. He was a caring and dedicated school board member who always advocated for the people of Pitt County Schools. His voice will be missed."

Superintendent Dr. Beverly Emory said, ""Matthew exemplified a servant of God, always positive, never complained despite his own health challenges, and always about the children. He set a good example for all of us in his short time on the Board. This loss is great but I hope we can honor him by striving to live as he did. My heart goes out to his loving family."

Ward had served as a school board member since September 13, 2010, representing District 1.

What do say about a man who has touched hearts all over this state? To know him was to love him. He was a one of a kind person. He was very positive and encouraging at all time even when he was feeling very low. My prayers are for the ones he left behind: his wife, children, and all the children of Pitt County Schools who would not be who and what they are without his leadership, guidance, love, attention, encouragement and understanding. I encourage the members of his churches to stay together as you go through this challenging time.

Hello, My name is James Ward, Matthew was my little brother. I wish to thank all of you for your comments about my brother. He was the baby of our family but was so giving and had so much heart that the hole in our lives will never be made whole again. As I am preparing to travel home today I decided to google him and found all of you. We are in pain as a family but knowing how he touched so many lives really helps us. I was just in NC last week to spend time with him and we had a good time joking around as we always do, Big Brother to little one. I feel so blessed that I had that time with him and know that he will live forever in all of our hearts. Bless you and I hope to meet you in NC.
