Pitt County Civil Rights Group Pleased With Court Ruling

A civil rights group says the time has come for the Pitt County School System to meet with them about school redistricting.

The U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals last week overturned a federal district court decision which approved the school system's plan to realign school attendance areas. Now, the Pitt County Coalition for Educating Black Children says it's now time for the school system meet to work out a plan attaining "unitary status".

At a morning news conference, the group says since the appeal, the school board has refused to meet and discuss a possible resolution.

That original attendance plan favored student location to schools over demographically balanced facilities.

But the school system says it included the group when it received public input about the plan. Superintendent Dr. Beverly Emory says there hasn't been communication between the two groups because of the legal action brought against them. She said it's typical practice when someone hires a lawyer that the school board stops talking and let the lawyers work it out.

Emory says the court decision means the plan needs more review and the criteria used for the plan may not have been the right criteria.

The Pitt County Coalition for Educating Black Children will hold a press conference about "what's next" after winning a court ruling over education in Pitt County.

The press conference will be held in front of the Pitt County Board of Education headquarters on Tuesday. The group said they plan to propose working together with the school board to establish a joint "unitary status plan."

Redistricting in Greenville and Pitt County has been an ongoing issue, as officials looked to balance the race of children who attend schools along with trying to keep kids in the schools closest to their homes.
