Parents Irate Over School Questions Using Slaves As Examples

An effort to mix two school subjects in a math lesson adds up to outrage at a Georgia school in Norcross.

Third graders at Beaver Ridge Elementary School near Atlanta brought home an assignment that shocked their parents last week.

The idea to integrate social studies and math lessons resulted in questions like, "Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?" Another asked students to figure out how many beatings Frederick Douglass received in a week. Irate parents couldn't believe their eyes and school officials finally spoke out saying it was not done maliciously.

School leaders collected the assignments and say they won't be used again and the district has opened a human resources investigation into the two teachers involved.

Well, at least it was oranges. It could have been something else. The NAACP would have a aneurism over that.

If this gets parents involved that otherwise would never be involved maybe something good can come out of it.

Slavery was a horrible thing and should be taught as such. But its time to let it go. Where would 90% of the American black population be today if it were not for slavery? Either living in Africa or not living at all. Because of slavery blacks have the opportunity to either make a living by working or living off of the ones that do work. You need to thank your ancestors for bearing the burden so you could live a better life.

Back... wellz, we ow de white man fo savin us! Are you serious? Where would 90% of the black population be? Ah, probably home, where would the white man be if it wasn't for "SPANISH" Christoper Columbus? Let's not act like this is the white man's country ok?! Next... Africa is a rich Continent. How about you google Africa and you'll see that. Don't believe all of Africa is black, and people are still running around in the bush with hungry kids with blow flies on their lips. Television has you very naive. There are billionaires, homes, and businesses in Africa. (Go figure) Can you believe the police actually drive around in Mercedes. I'm not going to live there because I was born here, my father is Native American and this is my home. No wonder the entire world thinks the US is stupid... because you just said in so many words... black people should be glad that slavery happened. SMH lolololol .... I'm laughing at you!

I see I touched a nerve there science teacher. I'm surprised; as a science teacher you are suppose to accept obvious facts. But the facts are the facts and as bad as you hate to accept them they are what they are. Blacks don't owe the whites anything and visa versa. You need to learn how to comprehend statements as I said nothing negative about Africa, just that's where they probably would be if they were ever born. I will ask you this though; any genecide going on here in America? And the world thinks we're stupid because we have an arrogant, unqualified president that runs around apoplogizing for our deeds. You may be laughing at me but the world is laughing at us because of our community leader. Winning the Nobel Piece Prize for what; doing absolutely nothing.

Yes, there are millionaires in Africa...they're called politicians. Then there are the diamond traders- forced child labor has paid off well for them, and then there are the foreign officials. Anyway, if Africa is so rich, then let's make sure we elect officials willing to pull all US aid to them...since they're rich and such.

Get over it already!! It's a past history that most of us up here that are adults have learned about in school, it is in our history classes, but it is time to stop playing the poor pity slave game, wake up it is 2012 and slaves came in all color's!! To me hispanics working in the fields are no different than slaves from way back when! It is time to let the slave issue rest and teach our children history which involves parts of slavery... Just let it go!!

The fact is that it was racist no matter what race the teachers were. If you are white and you are not offended than you are a racist. If you are black and your are not offended than you are an idiot.

You Know, there were WHITE slaves, too. For you to assume that slaves means "blacks" is just a bad. Or do you think stereotyping is better than racism? That's the problem with the blacks in this country...they're ultra-sensetive to everything. Yet if the same thing was said about the white race, nothing would ever come of it. Blacks cry foul if you look at them funny. Whites have to take all kinds of lumps without saying anything. It's reverse racism.

Very poor judgement by the teacher and the question about the slaves and the Orange tree is historically inaccurate as the plantations that did exist in Georgia and Florida (and anywhere else, for that matter) pre-Civil War did not include maintaining Orange groves as a cash crop producer. Large scale groves began in the early 20th century. Did some deep South plantations have some Citrus trees for personal use? Probably but that isn't the gist of the Math question.

Will I get in trouble if I look out my window and count our guest from south of the border(that politically correct enough for you?) picking sweet potato, two potato, three potato, my grammar correct for all of you English professors?

I am a Republican and I work for a living. Funny, I thought it was mostly Democrats who received welfare and food stamps. I do agree with what you say about Hispanics--many, if not most of them, are very hard workers. They are willing to do jobs that lots of the spoiled people on welfare and our spoiled teenagers are not willing to do.

I worked the fields just like they do, but the difference is they automatically get alot of benefits that we don't get without the 21 questions....and yes they do work alot harder and I would hire hispanics to do any kind of work for me because they work until it is done and done right in most cases,, but Dept of Social Services has a more pleasant approach to provinding them with assistance, more than any other race.
