Troopers tell WITN that 73-year-old Lewis McAllister of Newport had just turned on to Highway 24 from Nine Mile Road in Carteret County when he rear-ended school bus heading to Broad Creek Middle School.
Troopers said McAllister was going approximately 35 miles per hour at 7:30 Friday morning when he hit the bus. He has now been charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
While some of the 40 students on board the bus complained of injuries, none of the students were transported.
Schools spokeswoman Tabbie Nance says 40 students were heading to Broad Creek Middle School around 7:30 a.m. The bus was stopped behind another bus that was picking up students on Highway 24 near Karobi Park when it was hit by the car.
The students were put on another bus for their trip to school this morning.
Troopers say 73-year-old Lewis McCallister of Newport was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
