WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) -- New Hanover County schools are saying good-bye to french fries and replacing them with oven baked crinkle fries.
The StarNews of Wilmington reported that the last of the fryers in high school cafeteria kitchens were removed this summer. Fryers in elementary and middle schools were removed a few years ago.
The change isn't mandated by the state, although nutrition director Imer Smith believes that will happen one day. She says she knows sales will drop but that the change will pay off in the overall wellness of children. The new fries will have six grams of fat per serving instead of 12 grams.
Retiring New Hanover High School Principal Chris Furr says fries were so popular in his cafeteria that running out of ketchup was a crisis.
