Dr. Ethan Lenker officially starts his new position as Pitt County Schools Superintendent on September 3rd, but Wednesday he decided to start his duties a little early by getting an inside look at some of the schools in his district.

Dr. Lenker toured two of the 36 schools in Pitt County Wednesday, including Welcome Middle School and North Pitt High School, where he met with teachers who are gearing up for the first day of class.

Lenker served as a superintendent for Sampson County Schools since 2008. He says the biggest thing he's working on with the Pitt County school system is understanding the importance of common core classes.

His new district is larger than the one he just left.

"18 schools verses 36- I mean I feel like I can't do my job as superintendent if I don't see what's happening in the buildings. I like to see the teachers working, see what the teachers need to be successful. I like to see that first hand, and getting around 36 schools is going to be a challenge obviously, but it's one that I feel is essential for a superintendent to do," said Lenker.

Lenker says, another priority for him as he adjusts to his new position is figuring out the budget.
