Gov. Perdue: DHHS Must Offer Pre-K To All Eligible 4-Year-Olds

Gov. Beverly Perdue is stepping into a battle over North Carolina's efforts to prepare all 4-year-olds for school.

Perdue on Wednesday ordered the Department of Health and Human Services to offer pre-kindergarten education to all eligible 4-year-olds without saying how the state would pay for a potential flood of thousands of children.

The state's More At Four pre-kindergarten program last year served about 32,000 4-year-olds. An agency survey found there may be nearly twice that number of eligible children.

A Superior Court judge ruled last month that the state is required to serve any 4-year-old deemed at risk of falling behind their peers.

Legislative Republicans wanted to cut spending on the revamped program by 20 percent and charge parents a co-payment of up to 10 percent of their income.

Mr. Tim, How can you can someone dumb when you are the one that must be ignorant. It also looks like maybe you are made because you didn't get the education you needed or maybe you were just too dumb to learn. See People who do get help from the government do pay taxes. Also I think you need a crAzy ChEck because people who recieve those checks are really sick and can't help it. Not only that, but I know of a nurse, judge, and teacher who once had to rely on the government to help them because they were put in a bind. I also know of people who were making thousands of dollars that have been laid off and have family's and have had to get help from the gov. to just be able to provide food to put on the table. See one day you might need help, and maybe someone will hlep you. Everybody needs help some time or another. Just because they need help from the gov doesn't make them anyless of a person than yourself. Infact the way your feel and your comments make you ignorant. Next time please research the topic you want to comment on so that you will not look so dumb and childish. Also if conservatives(republicans) would not be so greedy and ignorant the would make the millionares and billionares pay taxes maybe our economy would be better. See people who are struggling and have gov help have to pay taxes; why not make those very well off start paying taxes. There was a company last year that made over $3 billion and never paid a dime on taxes.

Um, Govnerd PurrDumb, when you are short on cash, it isn't the time to buy everyone a round...you don't spend your last dime or go in the hole to end up washing the dishes for the establishment. The correct answer, PurrDumb, is to end the program until it can be funded....personally, I just want it ended along with smart start, head start, and migrant head start, WIC, Medicaid, CrAzY ChEcKs, welfraud, and any other program that gives tax dollars to people that WON'T work and DON'T pay taxes....I want Gov'ment to STOP being compassionate with my hard earned money. Any of you liberals out there that want to be compassionate, you CAN give YOUR money away.

Did all of the students who will attend the school of medicine attend pre-kindergarden? Maybe someone else will be in office after the next election.

Always misleading the general public. Right next to this issue of great concern is the great opportunity to get a $500,000 dog park ? ? ? What to do, what to do ? How bout we just re-asses the assesment of need of the children b4 the dogs. Get the right thing done for a change and put children w/much needed help and other things that influence our countries future in a positive way by just taking all the perks/monies/life long health care/retirement etc... from local-federal government peeps and that would reform more than their ill fated ways of thinking along w/Taxing. And,the truly important issues at hand to save our country in a positive way. Reverse rolls by letting politicians jump the borders and take a ride through the countries that are just plain chaos. Now thats education first hand and taxes would b near nothing...

Due to the budget cuts our Co. done away with pre-K but they raised our sheriffs pay and i think its a shame. There is no grace period after Aug. 31. My daughter is ready to go to school and cant because she was born Sept.1 so she has to fall behind and wait another year just because of one day. So there is nothing for her here even though i pay taxes. Why dont our sheriffs pay get cut and put he money back to our schools for kids education.

What happened to the pre-K that was in the schools? It was not called the 4 at more program and it was not based on how much money you had. In fact there was two different classes one that was for the high risk students and then there was one that the parents could pay for their child to attend. Its okay to cut the budget so that they do not continue to get a good education but we must make sure that attend pre-k. It is time for her to go!!!!
