Future Of Child Development Center Uncertain Due To Funding Issues

The future is uncertain for a child development center in Havelock that is dedicated to teaching special needs children.

The Craven Cherry Point Child Development Center has helped thousands of families and kids learn how to live a happy and healthy life with a disability.

The center helps kids from Craven, Pamlico, Carteret, Jones, Onslow and Beaufort counties.

State regulations have changed. The center is unable to offer infant care now. They have restriction on what programs they can offer because of their facility.

In 2007, they lost 70% of their funding. This year, they lost their Smart Start grant they've depended on since 1999. Thankfully, last week, they received a grant from the Bate Foundation that will make some of that up.

The future remains uncertain.

The center has been in operation for 37 years.

If a center for poor people with special needs are getting your tax dollar then you get all indignant. Meanwhile, the rich like Murdoch are putting it to you right and left and that is just fine for some reason. Wake Up!

Rob @5:33 hit the nail on the head. A lot of mis-information is being spread, I am willing to bet all the mis-informed posters are Fox viewers, lets take quick poll. Lets see...Ginger, and Obama Snake Oil...am I right?

Guess what? I had to pay my own day care. Can't afford it, don't have kids. Or do what my sister did, worked second shift while her husband worked first so they didn't have to pay for it. Choices in your life have consequences and you, not the taxpayer, should pay them.

That is exactly how it is at my house. My husband and I do not see each other as much as we'd like to but we were not brought up to depend on the government to take up OUR responsibilities. We chose to have our so to raise both physically and financially. And that is just what we do. As parents, sometimes we have to sacrifice in order to do for our family. It is hard but the rewards are and will be GREAT.

Well Ginger, It looks like you not only pay for your own daycare, you pay (through your tax dollars) for people like poor Mr. Murdoch to get richer. Thanks for being so smart and reponsible with your money.

Ginger and “A Mother”…as the parent that was speaking in the news piece I would like you to know I did in fact “pay my own day care”. Children DO NOT attend the Craven Cherry Point Child Development for free and at tax payer expense. Nowhere in this story was it ever implied the parents of these children do not pay, so seems to have been an incorrect assumption on your parts. There is ABSOLUTELY no “depend on the government to take up OUR responsibilities” whatsoever, and I do find those comments offensive. These people are as hard working and dedicated to their families as you claim to be. Oh, one last thing…having a child born with a birth defect or disability is not a “Choices in your life”, here’s hoping your families have nothing but “healthy normal babies”.

Well spoken Rob !! and well done. Chrystal is an amazing child and her parents and Craven County Child development have done an excellant job teaching her. Continue to fight for her rights. Just because she is disabled does not mean she has no rights. IF our tax dollars go anywhere, they should go to facilities in OUR country that need it. I can also atest to the fact that you don't take anything for free.

I believe the story clearly says that due to FUNDING issues, their future is uncertain. Reading into the article it makes mention of the fact that their grant money was lost/reduced. If indeed this money was from the government, then the tax payers are most certainly subsidizing this operation.

Yeah, there is no money for helpless children, but look who we do have TAX money for..Over the past four years Murdoch’s U.S.-based News Corp. has made money on income taxes. Having earned $10.4 billion in profits, News Corp. would have been expected to pay $3.6 billion at the 35 percent corporate tax rate. Instead, it actually collected $4.8 billion in income tax refunds, all or nearly all from the U.S. government." Thanks for not closing those loopholes Repugs!

Actually the information is freely available from quite a number of sources. And it is FACTUAL. As is the FACT that if Newscorp made any illegal payments to British officials then they have violated US law, and are subject to the consequences thereof.

Guessing you would also shut down public schools? Go ahead, start shutting down everything that “DEPENDS ON TAX MONEY TO SURVIVE”, and let us know when you are done…That should keep you busy for awhile.
