Elderly Driver Charged With School Bus Hit & Run

An elderly driver has been charged with hit and run after police say he struck the back to a school bus and kept going.

Two children on the Beaufort County school bus were treated at the scene of the Monday morning accident that happened on West Main Street in Belhaven. There were a total a 12 children from Northeast Elementary School on the bus at the time of the accident.

Police Chief Fred Clingenpeel says they were able to track down the vehicle after OnStar notified the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office of a vehicle that was stationary that had been involved in an accident.

They have charged 79-year-old Reginald Bishop, Jr. with misdemeanor hit and run and license restriction violation. After viewing the school bus camera, they also charged him with passing a stopped school bus.

Clingenpeel says when charged it appeared the elderly man was possibly having health issues and was eventually hospitalized.

Damage to the bus was estimated at $1,000 while Bishop's truck received around $3,000 damage.
