A week after East Carolina University trustees voted to recommend a tuition increase for the next school year, students who disagree with the possible hike are taking action.

Students are signing a petition against the increase, organized by ECU junior Jonathan Yelverton. Yelverton says he's planning to send the petition to the UNC Board of Governors to showcase how many people are against the tuition hike.

Last Friday, ECU trustees voted to recommend a 9.5% tuition increase for in-state undergrads and a 9.9% increase for out-of-staters and all graduate students. It breaks down to about $500 dollars more for in-state undergrads and more than $1700 more for out-of-state students. Yelverton says he's hoping people will also send letters to the board of governors.

"That's what these people up in the government and these board of governors and these trustees and the administration- they respond to personal letters, and that's what I'm trying to bring awareness to here today. I want every student to know that," said Yelverton.

The board of governors is scheduled to review and vote on the tuition increase in February, followed by the general assembly.
