Duplin County Schools Employees Laid Off Will Get Jobs Back

Hundreds of teachers, teacher assistants, and other school employees in Duplin County who thought they were out of jobs will have work next school year after all.

In May, the Duplin County School Board said it was forced to cut 210 positions in anticipation of a $5 million budget shortfall. Friday the school board voted unanimously to bring back the majority of employees after the chief financial officer said the passage of the state budget allowed more funding than expected. 130 teachers and assistants, and 80 clerical and janitorial employees were affected and will notified Monday that many of them have their jobs back.

    I am so happy that some of those deserving individuals will be coming back. Whoo Hoo! But I am a little flabbergasted because everyone affected will receive an email letting them know if they are among those who will get their jobs back or not, but what if they have been locked out of their work email, how will they know? Personally, I have sent one individual an email to her work email, and it has NOT kicked back to me showing the email address invalid. So sounds like to me her password has been changed at COUNTY LEVEL.

    So it appears the new budget is not so draconian as Bev and the rest of the libs would have us to believe. Thank You new legislators. May we have some more please?

    This is the same nonsence chicken little exercise these people do every year just scare tatics to get more money when will we learn that this public school crowd cannot be trusted?

    I also think that even though a shock, Duplin County was far better off preparing its education staff as a RIF. The early notice, even if eventually retracted, gave plenty enough time to allow someone to begin the job hunting process before the flood gates opened and other adjoining counties released potential RIF's too. People, if you want to point blame, look to your legislation and ask them why because DCBOE is a messenger in this issue, not the offender. Everything trickles down hill. DCBOE were acting upon the pending budget for this year.

    I applaud our administration for trying to do the right thing ahead of time and let these people know they would be jobless. Better to think you don't have a job and then learn you do than the opposite. Thank goodness we can hire these people back!

    It was all a ploy by the democrats in an attempt to kill the republican led budget using the fear factor. Duplin is not the first county to announce the teachers and assistants will still have jobs. Wake announced the same thing.

    Duplin County Schools- reactive, not proactive. I am glad these people got their jobs back, but they should start looking around for a new position, OUTSIDE Duplin County, as soon as possible. DP Schools has proven they act before having all the information needed.

      If for any reason a system thinks they may have to dismiss employees, they are required by law to inform them a certain number of days prior to their dismissal. The system does not have a choice. This is the law! Given the information they had at the time, they did the right thing although it may have caused some stress. The law works the same way OUTSIDE of Duplin County! I'm so glad to hear that most of the ones dismissed can get their job back.

        Reductions in force are still taking place in other counties and in other LEAs. Are you suggesting that ALL of them are breaking the law? Regardless- those employees should know that they are in danger of losing their jobs the next fiscal cycle, as the economy doesn't look good into the near future. They may find themselves going through the same emotional turmoil a year from now. They need not expect any better treatment, next time, either.

        Well then, there are a lot of counties not abiding by the law. Our county always waits for the budget to see exactly what there will be. Yes, we are told that there may be some cuts, but no one is handed a pink slip until he knows exactly what he can do. Then he will use transfers and retirees then move from there. Thankful I don't live/work in Duplin County.

          I'd rather have a heads up two months in advance that I might not have a job and then get it back than not know until the last minute when any openings are already filled. And as someone else stated this is happening in lots of counties because yes you are supposed to give employees a certain amount of notice.
