Five teacher assistants in Craven County are losing their jobs, thanks to cuts in the state budget.
Craven County lost $1.2 million in state funding for the assistants, which equaled 36 positions. The county said it had been planning ahead for possible cuts, but says it couldn't absorb all of the 21% funding cut.
The five employees last day will be next Monday, while Craven County says it is freezing all teacher assistant positions until further notice because of an expected additional 19% cut next year.
