A school bus with special needs students inside caught fire this afternoon. Everyone on board safely made it off the bus.
It happened around 3:20 p.m. on Highland Drive, near Ridgewood Manor Nursing Home in Washington.
The Beaufort County school bus is a total loss.
Superintendent Dr. Don Phipps says there were four children on board, including one confined to a wheelchair. He says the three adults were quick thinking and got everyone off okay. Phipps says the driver realized there was a problem and immediately pulled over.
The superintendent says it appears the fire started in the engine area.
The children were transferred to another bus to take them home, while the fire closed down Highland Drive.
Phipps says the bus manufacturer and the state will inspect the bus for a cause.
