A first grader was struck and killed Thursday morning at her school bus stop in Edgecombe County as her three siblings watched.
Sgt. David Wainwright confirms that 7-year-old Janell Simmons died after being struck on Highway 43, outside of Rocky Mount. The accident happened around 6:45 a.m.
Investigators say the child darted into the road and was hit by a Ford pickup truck. The child was thrown an estimated 30 feet.
The girl attended GW Bulluck Elementary School and was taken to Nash General Hospital where she later died.
Superintendent John Farrelly says the girl and her three siblings were at the bus stop. He says she crossed the road for some reason and as a school bus approached from one side and the truck from the other, she ran back across.
Farrelly says he was told the pickup truck driver was concentrating on the three children on the other side of the road when the victim darted in front of him.
Sgt. Wainwright say the pickup truck driver will not face any charges.
The funeral for Janell will be 3:00 p.m. Monday at Pittman Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Battleboro.
