A standoff has ended peacefully at a North Carolina campus house where a man accused of stealing an assault rifle had locked himself in when police came to serve a warrant.
Police say 24-year-old student Jared Dale Knight gave himself up Wednesday about three hours after officers ordered the lockdown of the Campbell University campus in a rural area about 40 miles south of Raleigh.
The student and military veteran was arrested on Tuesday and charged with stealing an AR-15 carbine rifle from the gun store where he worked.
He posted a $3,000 bond and police say they recovered the gun.
Sheriff Larry Rollins credited a negotiator with convincing Knight to leave the house peacefully.
Police say they told students and faculty to stay indoors as a precaution.
