Governor In The East Pushing Tax Hike For Education

Monday, Governor Beverly Perdue toured several cities in the state and right here in the East, pushing the importance of preserving money for education in the state budget.

The Governor arrived at South Central High School Monday afternoon in Winterville to encourage teachers and taxpayers.

The Governor's concerns stem from the house's proposal to cut seven percent from the public education fund, meaning teachers could lose their jobs and classroom sizes could increase.

Those who oppose the Governor's plan stood outside and inside holding signs stating, no more taxes. Opponents say more than 50 percent of the budget goes toward public education already and many schools are still not making the grade.

Perdue says education is the economic development for our state and should be the priority in the budget.
