It may be summertime but it's back to school for many people in Eastern Carolina.

Pitt Community College officials say they're seeing an 18 percent increase in summer enrollment compared to last year.

Dr. Donald Spell attributes a lot of the increase to the recession and people wanting to further their education to get a better job, or even get a job at all.

Because summer sessions are self-supporting they are not worried about funding, but Spell says there are some worries for the budget in the fall.

Dr. Spell says already the school has received a 56 percent increase in admissions applications for the fall, and they plan on having more students than ever.
