The chairman of the Wake County Republican Party is encouraging parents to keep their children out of school on Memorial Day.
Administrators say students at year-round Wake County schools are scheduled for class Monday because principals preferred to be off the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and didn't want to shorten the winter break.
In a news release, Wake County GOP chairman Claude Pope says children should stay home so they can honor veterans with their families.
School officials said in a news release that classes for year-around students will be held Monday and they expect parents to make the decision that is best for their families.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg students also will be in class Monday to make up for a snow day.
