Bowles: UNC Layoffs Starting Now In Face Of Cuts

University of North Carolina President Erskine Bowles says campuses are starting to lay off workers but are trying to provide as much advance notice as possible.

Bowles told the State Employees Association of North Carolina on Friday that chancellors are trying to absorb $175 million in UNC system budget cuts this fiscal year. Gov. Beverly Perdue's budget proposal would order even higher reductions next year.

Bowles was responding to a letter from association executive director Dana Cope questioning whether layoffs were necessary now.

University of North Carolina at Greensboro Chancellor Linda Brady said this week that layoffs would begin at the school, which could lead to more than 100 workers losing their jobs.

Furloughs are good. That's what we're advocating for at UNC-Chapel Hill so that people can be granted their jobs back once the economy is revived.
