Pitt County Student Returning To National Spelling Bee

A Winterville student is headed back to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. for a third time.

Hope Middle School student Mayee Zhu won the honor Saturday at the 17th Annual Downeast N.C. Regional Spelling Bee at Washington High School.

Zhu survived 20 rounds and 55 other contestants to take first place. The winning word was sorghum...a syrup produced by evaporating the juice from the stems of certain tropical grasses.

The second place winner is Nicole Robinson from Frink Middle School in La Grange, Lenoir County. The third place winner is Isabella Mayo from John Small Elementary in Washington, Beaufort County.

Zhu will take part in the 82nd annual National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. May 24-May30.

WITN's Dave Jordan was the pronouncer for the words at Saturday's Downeast Regional Spelling Bee.

The Greenville Daily Reflector put the Spelling Bee on the front cover to shine the winners and their schools. It would be cool if we have an adult spelling bee in the area. We have been depending too much on the spell check.

We knew Mayee Zhu would win the Regional Spelling Bee this year because she knows all the words we know and we don’t know and she is a child prodigy. I wanted to watch her compete on Saturday but my parents said I would make her nervous. Me and my friends are so happy that Mayee won the title of the best speller again.

If only some of the posters on here would have to participate in a "spelling bee"....especially those using that "text-speak"; they'd get "stung!"
