Budget Concerns Mean School Will Close

One school in the east will be forced to close next year due to budget cuts.

Bridges Alternative school in Morehead City will soon shut down. The school is home to 26 at risk students and a dozen staff members.

When the school closes the students will return to their home campuses enjoying amenities they didn't have.

Interim superintendent Jeanne Huntley says moving the students will save the school system more than $300,000. That's because they'll use the building to house West Carteret students as that school is renovated -- eliminating the need for temporary trailers.

Huntley says the school system is currently under a hiring freeze, but when that lifts she says the staff at Bridges will be the first considered for open positions
