FIRST ON WITN: Fire At Eppes Intentionally Set

Investigators say a fire Wednesday at a Greenville middle school was intentionally set.

The fire at C.M. Eppes Middle School was contained to a first floor classroom.

Fire investigators tell WITN News that a teacher's winter coat, placed on the back of a chair, was set on fire. A ream of paper was also used to help fuel the flames.

The fire department says most of the chair was burned and the classroom received a lot of smoke damage.

Classes at Eppes resumed today with students assigned to that classroom moved to other parts of the building.

A Greenville police department spokesman says they're not yet ready to discuss how their investigation is going.

Previous Story

Fire Wednesday afternoon caused moderate damage to one classroom at C.M. Eppes Middle School in Greenville.

Six fire trucks, four ambulances and other law enforcement officers
converged at the Elm Street school.

Officials say damage was confined to an 8th grade language arts classroom.

The principal discovered the fire in the first-floor classroom around 4:30 p.m. There were about 20 people inside the bulding at the time, one or two who are students and the building was safely evacuated. There were no injuries.

Pitt County Schools public information officer Heather Mayo says the school will be open Thursday and they're making arrangements for students who use that classroom.

If it's my guess, it was a student who apparently must have seriously hated that teacher bad enough to do such a bad thing, but I could be wrong.

Hey editor, what is the rest of this: "Fire investigators tell WITN News that a teacher's winter coat, placed on the back of a chair." Is that where the fire started?
