UPDATED: Teacher Accused Of Having Sex With Student

Another Wayne County teacher has been arrested for having sexual activity with a student.

Shannon Herring, an exceptional children's teacher at Southern Wayne High School, has been charged with two counts of sexual activity with a student.

Deputies say Herring had sex with the 17-year-old boy on at least two occasions during October and November of last year. Authorities say the encounters did not happen at the school.

The 32-year-old Herring, who lives in Kinston, was freed on a $5,000 secured bond.

The school system says Herring was hired in August 2007 and was placed on administrative leave November 17th, the day before the school went to authorities with the allegations.

Last Friday a former teacher at Mount Olive Middle School was arrested after being accused of sexual misconduct with a student.

This is a shame. We send our children to school to get an education, we trust our educators and some of them are doing this to our children. There is no way to filter this out, unless they commit a crime as has been alleged here. There has been a trend now more than ever of teachers (especially female teachers) committing these crimes. None of the sex laws would stop this from happening and more than likely we will have another "sex offender/predator". In my opinion, media in general has led to this decline in morality. As "Chuck" noted earlier, TV shows like "Cougars" and other shows that glorify sexuality and aberrant behavior are the tip of the iceberg. Segregating students is not the answer, because there are enough cases of male teacher/student and female teacher/student. Makes me wonder once my little one is ready for school, if I will home school instead. I hope there can be a realistic solution to this issue.

Look People, I taught a year in Jones Co. and the girls were all over me, I had one come up to me and kiss me in the hall, and had many offers to come over, or "when we gona "hook up Mr. E". Parents need to teach their children morals and yes taking GOD out of the schools does have a lot to do with IT!

People practice what they see, look at the TV, sex everywhere "Cougers". Is it ok to show it to our children on TV but not practice? Where was this teacher when I was going to school, I sure could have used the self confidence at that age.

She should be fired, NOT placed on "Administrative Leave". She gets paid for being on "Administrative Leave". That is NOT fair to the other hard working teachers that do the right thing.

I suspect this student may have been having sex with other students or adults long before he convinced this teacher to put out for him. Let's give her the benefit of the doubt until something more substantial than 'he said-she said' stories comes along.

I have read the comments pertaining this issue and I see people are very expressive. That is their right. I read about the Teacher in Plymouth, N.C. and her situation, and they were also expressive, but more abusive. But of these women have standards they have to sustain because of their jobs. I am not saying either are guilty, but we must rememeber, our children are entrusted into their care. Let us pray for them and our children. If they are guilty, remove them. Check the backgrounds more closely and stop sweeping stuff under the rugs because this cousin Do Rights folks.
