Local School Honored As One Of The Best

For the second year in a row, a school in the east is being recognized as one of the best high schools in the country.

U.S. News and World Report designated North Edgecombe High School as a Bronze Award winner and one of the best U.S. high schools.

U.S. Senator Richard Burr met Tuesday at the school to congratulate all involved.

The award for Edgecombe High School was given based on the school's ability to get high schools students ready for college.

One of the ways school officials are now helping students get ready for college is a laptop program.

All students at all Edgecombe County Schools can get ahead of the game by using a school-issued laptop. The sudents just have to pay $25.00 for insurance. They have to turn the laptops back in at the end of the year.

The comments about are school board are correct. They do not govern as they should -look closely at the rest of the Edgecombe County schools -they are dropping AVID and AIG programs (laying off those teachers) and keeping the ones that don't work. South Edgecombe can't get their students to pass the Algebra bench marks -what do they do? Make the coaches teach algebra. Also -one male teacher has been photographed asleep at his desk repeatedly...does he keep his job? ABSOLUTELY. Don't be so quick to want help from our school board. This so called honor doesn't reflect the truth.

It is a pure shame that so many people can take something positive and thrive on making it negative!

Hey Mike, North Edgecombe has WAY WAY WAY less students than Rose. North Edgecombe is out in the country, the fields, and Rose is in the city, the ghetto part of Greenville. Look at what surrounds the two schools and tell me. Otherwise, per capita, North Edgecombe has a much bigger % of population being black, whereas it's more white for Rose. Rose probably has a ot more % of people being Chinese as well. Also look at the difference in their baseball programs, North Edgecombe, near last place in a 1A conference, and Rose, state 4A champions of 2008. There is plenty of difference. Insider, I beet that Edgecombe County is nowhere near as biased as Martin County. Anonymous, you must not be thinking about some of the high schools down around the beach. There is NEVER any trouble there.

What, we can't have a school doing well in NC. The dumbing down of America.

JH Rose could take a lesson from this.

Mike-the difference is that this particular school is the "pet" of the county administration. If they keep it the way it is then it gets more recognition for the county because of the skewed student body. The other two high schools have twice as many students, how is that right? This school only has a student teacher ratio of approximately 1:12. Why are we, as taxpayers, paying for this school to have so few students when the other schools are so overcrowded? It can't keep a principal! There have been at least 5 in 5 years. Does that sound like an award winning school? Why do they keep leaving? Maybe they know something you don't. It isn't fair to the rest of us for them to be allowed to have 10 kids in a classroom when the other two have 30 . It is ridiculous for them to be awarded...again! Look at the original article, it is very complicated but more detailed. Just fed up with this school getting the credit that the other two deserve just because of it's demographics.

Congratulations to the students, faculty and parents of this school. Take a good hard look and compare this school with JH Rose. What is the big difference between the two?
