A bridge closure will impact three bus routes in Carteret County starting Monday morning.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation will close the nine foot road bridge near Ram's Horn Road for four months. That will bring about some changes for bus routes for students going to Newport Elementary, Newport Middle and West Carteret High School.

Here's how the information was released on the Carteret County Schools Website. Their website is carteretcountyschools.org

Three bus routes in the Nine Foot Road area of Newport will be altered beginning the morning of Monday, January 5.

School officials were notified in late December that NC Department of Transportation officials were closing the Nine Foot Road bridge near Ram's Horn Road for repairs.

DOT officials stated the bridge would remain closed until early April.
The bridge closing will impact portions of the routes for Newport Elementary School bus 187, Newport Middle School bus 192 and West Carteret High School bus 178.

"We are working now to make the most efficient decisions concerning the school bus routes impacted by the closing of this bridge," Carteret County Public School System Transportation Director John Barbour said.

"We know this bridge closing will be an inconvenience to parents and students, and we hope to determine the most time and fuel efficient bus routes to be used while the bridge work is taking place."

Mr. Barbour noted school bus routes will be slightly altered beginning the morning of Monday, January 5. Then school officials and drivers will work Monday to determine the routes to be used until the bridge work is complete.

Those changes and times will be shared with students Monday afternoon.

The following are the changes for the Monday, January 5, morning bus routes.

Newport Elementary School bus 187 - The bridge closing impacts two stops on this route. Those stops on Nine Foot Road are the ones between Quinn Loop and Holly Springs.

For the duration of the bridge work or until notified by the school, students at those two stops will ride bus 206. Beginning Monday,
January 5, bus 206 will pick up the students at those two stops.

Newport Middle School bus 192 - The portion of the bus route on Nine Foot Road between Highway 70 and Ram's Horn Road will be pickup up between 10-20 minutes later than normal on Monday. The other portion of the route will be picked up on time.

Students will be told Monday of the new times for pick up beginning Tuesday.
West Carteret High School bus 178 - The portion of the bus route on Nine Foot Road between Highway 70 and Ram's Horn Road will be picked up at the same time as normal. The remainder of the route will be picked up about 10-20 minutes later on Monday.

Students will be told Monday of the new times for pick up beginning Tuesday.
"We ask that parents and students, as well as other motorists in that area, be patient with bus traffic while these alternate routes are finalized," Mr. Barbour said.

"We also regret that we could not provide parents with this information prior to the December school break, but we were not notified of this bridge closing until after students were home for the break."

Mr. Barbour urges parents with students impacted by these route changes to ask their students Monday night about the time changes they will be notified of at their respective schools on Monday.
