Woman Inmate Dies At Wayne County Jail

The State Bureau of Investigation has been called in after an inmate died at the Wayne County jail this morning.

Deputies say Karen Jones, who was serving a seven day sentence for DW,I became ill around 6:00 a.m. Detention officers called EMS, but the 21-year-old woman was pronounced dead when they arrived.

Major Tom Effler says they believe the woman died from natural causes, but any jail death is investigated by the SBI.

I can tell you one thing. The deputies did not call the EMS or get her any kind of help until she was almost gone. They don't give a damn in jail especially that jail so I know you pretty much have to be dead to get an ambulance called. I hope her family sues the hell out of that jail and gets the other inmates to testify. This makes me angry. Even though she was there for just seven days they treated her like a murderer and refused to help her until it was too late. What about her rights?

Karen was loved by many, a wonderful mother, friend, daughter, and sister. She was also extremely diabetic and was refused her insulin while serving time in this Wayne County Jail, which was the result of her death. So quit the rumors and leave her with some peace.

Definition for death by natural causes: 'A death by natural causes, as recorded by coroners and on death certificates,... is one that is primarily attributed to natural agents: usually an illness or an internal malfunction of the body. For example, a person dying from complications from influenza (an infection) or a heart attack (an internal body malfunction) would be listed as having died of natural causes. Old age is not a scientifically recognized cause of death; there is always a more direct cause although it may be unknown in certain cases and could be one of a number of aging-associated diseases.' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_by_natural_causes

To all you people who seem to think it isn't possible for a 21 year old to just drop dead from natural causes, how do you explain all the high school athletes who just dropped dead this year? I must have seen 6 or 8 stories on WITN alone about it.

My first wife died from a heart attack at 38. A former co-worker of mine lost a 3 year old daughter from a heart condition they didn't know she had. It can happen to anyone at any time.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss; thank you for sharing. A co-worker of my husbands died in his sleep of a massive heart attack at the age of 30 yrs. old over 20 years ago; it does happen.
