CHIEF: Woman Leads Several Agencies On High Speed Chase Through Trent Woods & New Bern

A police department says that a woman led them and several other agencies on a vehicle chase through Trent Woods and New Bern.

Trent Woods Police Chief Tony Lee says 37-year-old Rose Burgess of Morehead City has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, with more charges pending.

Chief Lee says that around 9 p.m. Friday, a Trent Woods officer responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle on private property on Country Club Road. Officials say when the officer tried to make contact with person in the vehicle, later identified by police as Burgess, she sped off.

Officials say that the Craven County Sheriff’s Office, Highway Patrol, and New Bern Police joined in pursuit of Burgess. Chief Lee says that according to his officer, Burgess drove through between 10 and 15 front yards during the chase.

Chief Lee says that during the course of the chase officers noted that the dome light came on from time to time, and that at one point it appeared Burgess was smoking a substance from a crack pipe.
The pursuit made its way to a cul-de-sac on Allen Drive where the vehicle appeared to stop. Chief Lee says that as officers were approaching, the vehicle drove right at them. According to Chief Lee, one of the officers, feeling Burgess was trying to run him over, drew his gun and fired 4 rounds. None of the rounds struck Burgess, according to officials.

Chief Lee says that stop sticks deflated two of the front tires on the vehicle, and that Burgess eventually crashed her vehicle into a ditch on Madison Avenue in New Bern. We’re told that two officers were able to remove Burgess from the vehicle with the help of a taser used by a Craven County deputy.

Burgess was taken to CarolinaEast Medical Center for minor injuries and was eventually placed in the Craven County Jail under a $200,000 bond.
