POLICE: Well Dressed Thief Tries To Steal Cigarette Machine

Police are trying to find a man who tried to load a cigarette vending machine into the bed of a pickup truck.

Greenville police say it happened a week ago at the City Hotel & Bistro on Greenville Boulevard. Around 10:00 a.m. that morning, hotel employees noticed the well dressed man walking around the lobby and hallways for a while. During the hour, the man was seen talking on a cell phone several times and appeared to be waiting on someone.

But instead, the man retrieved a handcart from outside and tried to load the hallway vending machine into a pickup truck that he had parked near the hotel pool. An employee confronted the man, and at that point he left.

The handcart was recovered and processed for fingerprints. Police distributed photos from the hotel's surveillance cameras to area law enforcement agencies, and now are turning to the public for their help in identifying the man.

He is described as a white man, with short brown hair. He was dressed in a light colored shirt and light brown khaki pants and dark shoes. To see a larger picture of the man, click on the PHOTOS tab at the top of the story.

Anyone who can identify the man should call the Greenville Police Department at 252-329-4315, or Pitt Greenville CrimeStoppers at 252-758-7777. CrimeStoppers will pay a reward for information that leads to an arrest in this case.
