Police have made an arrest in one of two murder cases that hit Elizabeth City on New Years Day.
Jyrell Lee of Elizabeth City is charged with the murder of Quintin Epps. The 21-year-old man was found shot several times near McMorrine and Shepard streets. He died several hours later at a Norfolk hospital.
Tuesday afternoon the body of Jamiel Walker was found behind a house on Shepard Street. There have been no charges in that shooting death and police have not said whether the two shootings are connected. Patrols in that area of Elizabeth City have been increased because of the shootings.
Members of the Elizabeth City Police Department and the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating two fatal shootings that occurred in Elizabeth City on Tuesday, January 1, 2013.
On January 1, 2013, at approximately 2:23 a.m. officers of the Elizabeth City Police Department found a male subject lying in the middle of Shepard Street near the intersection of McMorrine Street. The victim, whose name is being withheld until family members can be notified, was shot several times in the torso and lower extremities. The victim was transported to Albemarle Hospital then transferred to Norfolk Sentara by Nightingale, where he was pronounced dead at 4:50 a.m.
During the investigation into the death of the first victim, Police Department received a call at approximately 1:14 p.m. of the body of a second male victim found behind the residence of 500 Shepard Street, having suffered from apparent gunshot wounds. The identity of the second victim is also being withheld until family members can be notified.
The police have a person of interest in custody and investigation into both of these cases is on-going.
