Trio Charged After Church Bell Stolen

A church bell that's more than 100 years old has been returned after it was stolen from a Wayne County church.

Deputies say the bell was stolen on December 30th from a church in the Rosewood community. A trustee and another church member came upon the thieves as they were leaving the church and provided deputies with a description of their vehicle.

A citizen later reported seeing the bell at a local metal dealer and deputies were able to recover the bell and return it to the church. Michelle Barnes of Pikeville, Santonio James of Goldsboro and Brett Warren of Goldsboro were charged with felony larceny, felony possession of stolen goods and obtaining property by false pretenses.

They were jailed on $15,000 bonds, while the bell--worth $2,000--was damaged slightly.

The 3 people that stole the bell should be made to pay for the repairs to the bell. The junk yard should ask questions but to busy getting stolen bell.

Someone in my family went into Sears here in town to shop, and some thugs sawed off the catalytic converter on her jeep. Agree with comments about the junk dealers. They are not stupid. They know this stuff is stolen.

Arrest and charge the metal dealer. He knew darn well this bell didn't belong to those fools. Any idiot would have known that. They are the problem with all the copper and such being stolen from job sites and vacant homes losing their heating and cooling systems. Have you ever thought that maybe these thieves are actually working for the metal dealer? And the dealer walks away free and clear....like the pawn shops. Another upstanding way to steal legally, have the stuff they deal with is stolen goods. American way, can't make it on your own, steal from the ones that can.

While I agree with you that he should have known some crackhead looking hillbillies did not own the bell, the church would have never gotten it back if he didn't buy it.

i own a recycling company and yes we unknowingly by stolen stuff. we fully cooperate LEO and often times go above and beyound what is expected or required. We have an excellent working relationship with our local law enforcement and in a few cases helped get some drug dealers behind bars. But with all that said and u still have a problem with us I can only just say we are doing buisness as the law requires and next you will be blaming the pharmacist for the meth labs. Your ignorancy is astounding!
