The date for the federal trial of a former North Carolina state legislator accused of theft, fraud and filing false tax returns has been set.
A court document filed this week says jury selection in the trial of Stephen LaRoque of Kinston will begin May 20 in federal court in Greenville.
A grand jury indicted LaRoque last July when he was still in the state House.
The 12-count indictment says LaRoque benefited personally from federal loan money designed to help rural communities by funneling funds to another company he owned. The trial originally had been set to begin last fall.
LaRoque resigned from the House shortly after the indictment. He served in the General Assembly for three terms.
