Police said a man was shot in the street overnight in Ayden and the search continues Friday for the person behind the gun.
Ayden's police chief, Barry Stanley, told WITN his officers arrived on the 4300 block of Pitt Street to find Kentrell Alston had been carried off the street and onto the porch of a nearby home, suffering from a gunshot to his abdomen.
Police said he was rushed to Vidant Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Chief Stanley said Alston was taken into surgery soon after his arrival at the hospital.
A hospital spokeswoman said Alston was not listed in hospital records, so she was unable to give us an update on the victim's condition.
Officers said they are currently working on leads in the case and do not believe there is any threat to the community.
Police have not released any information about the shooter.

Ayden Police are being assisted in their investigation by the Pitt County Sheriff's Office and the Highway Patrol.
Chief Stanley says detectives are heading to Vidant to talk with the victim to try and identify a suspect.
