A 16-year-old girl has been charged with the first degree murder of her newborn baby.

Rebecca Jo Blackmore of Knotts Island has a Monday court appearance on the charge in Currituck County.

Deputies say they were alerted by Chesapeake, Virginia police last Friday that a 16-year-old girl was in the emergency room at Chesapeake General Hospital. The girl told Virginia authorities that she had just given birth to a baby girl and it was dead in the closet of her bedroom.

Deputies found the baby in the closet and say an autopsy shows the newborn died of stab wounds. The Medical Examiner's Office in Greenville says the baby was born alive and survived only for a short amount of time. The cause of death was multiple stab wounds.

Blackmore is being held without bond.
