Three Suspects In Deputy Shooting Have Prior Criminal Records

Three of the five suspects accused in the shooting death of a Nash County deputy have prior records, and two of them have served time in prison.

Lamont D. Byrd, age 18, was convicted in Lenoir County in 2010 of larceny, assault and assault with a deadly weapon. He was released in April 2011. Byrd was convicted in August 2010 of assault and battery. He was released in September 2010. Byrd was convicted in July 2009 of simple assault. He was released in April 2010.

The NC Department of Correction website shows multiple infractions during the time Byrd was locked up in prison, including lock tampering, creating an offensive condition, extortion/strong arm and disobeying order.

Byrd was also sentenced to probation for other crimes in Lenoir County, including misdemeanor breaking and entering and possession of stolen goods.

HIs brother, Maretto Byrd, was also arrested in Deputy Lewis' death.

Online records show Maretto got out of prison in April 2010 after serving nearly seven years for assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and robbery with a dangerous weapon in Lenoir County.

The NC Department of Corrections website shows Maretto was given ten infractions during his time in prison, including sexual acts, gang activity and assault with a weapon.

Devine Slade is a 17-year-old suspect in the deputy's death. He had prior convictions for breaking and entering and damage to property in Lenoir County.

No record shows for 16-year-old Kion Dail.
