Son Of Former Sheriff Headed To Prison

The son of a former North Carolina sheriff is one of four men headed to prison for writing fake mortgage loans and pocketing the cash.

Multiple media organizations reported that 37-year-old Brian Keith Causey of Wilmington was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in prison. His father is former New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey, who retired last year.

Three other men were sentenced to prison terms of between four months and six months.

Prosecutors say the men paid people to pose as buyers of foreclosed mobile homes in Columbus County. The fake buyers obtained mortgage loans and the scammers split part of the loan payment among themselves.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Murphy says the four men planned to sell the mobile homes before the banks foreclosed.
