The Onslow County Sheriff's Office says a 21-month-old was assaulted by the mother's boyfriend and now both are charged.

21-year-old Michael Hansley of Jacksonville is charged with misdemeanor child abuse, contributing to a juvenile being abused and assault on a child under 12. The child's mother, 22-year-old Kristyn Smith of New Bern, is charged with resisting, delaying, or obstructing an officer.

The sheriff's office says Hansley hit the child back in November, telling investigator's he was upset with the child's mother but didn't want to hit her because he would be charged with assault on a female, which would be his second such charge.

The child was taken to the hospital for treatment where officials say the mother blamed the injuries on a day care worker.

Hansley's bond is $7.500 while Smith's is $2,500.
